Services started to resume operations at 3.35pm on Thursday, roughly 90 minutes after initial reports of problems.
However, Virgin Australia's website was down despite the return of other websites.
Australian CDN company peakhour.io said the latest issue that hit major companies underlined the possibility that anyone could be affected by a network failure.
A Content Delivery Network is a global cloud-based network that connects computers to improve the speed, security, and reliability of websites for their customers.
Peakhour co-founder Daniel D'Alessandro explained that CDNs often create many copies of websites for their customers, then disperse the copies and cache them across the world.
People who visit a site will be served from their nearest cache, making the website appear more responsive and faster because it eliminates the performance limitations of distance and bandwidth between the client and server.
CDNs can also increase website reliability Users will not be aware that the website goes down, as long as the caches remain functioning.
"Many CDN providers also offer cyber security services that block the attack traffic close to where it's sourced. This prevents it from reaching the target.
However, hackers are often able to bring websites and apps down through a method known as DDOS which stands for distributed denial of service, where they orchestrate a mass surge of traffic at certain weak points on a network in a bid to overwhelm it.
The CEO added: "Akamai is a venerable company and well respected globally, but as we've seen twice in the past week, outages can happen to anyone.
"The fact that so many major organizations, as well as the vital services they provide across Australia are all destroyed in a single time, regardless of cause, indicates a critical need for redundancy.
Companies that route their traffic through a third-party, whether it's a CDN, DDOS protection, or any other reason, all require a Plan B, like with any other critical piece of their IT infrastructure.
